Bara Imambara, Lucknow

Bara Imambara is one of the most famous historical monuments in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. History of Bara Imambara

Bara Imambara was constructed during a severe famine in Awadh. The Nawab started this project to provide employment to thousands of people who had no work at that time. Rich and poor worked together on this monument, which shows unity and compassion. The word ‘Bara’ means big, and ‘Imambara’ is a place of worship for Shia Muslims, especially used during Muharram.

Architecture and Design

The architecture of Bara Imambara is truly impressive. The most amazing part is the central hall, which is one of the largest arched halls in the world without any beams or pillars for support. This hall is about 50 meters long and 15 meters high.

Another major attraction is the Bhul Bhulaiya (maze). It has hundreds of narrow passages and staircases, making it exciting and a little mysterious for visitors. The building also includes Asfi Mosque on the top and a large stepwell called Shahi Baoli, which was once used as a water reservoir.
