Kashi Vishwanath - Varanasi (Kashi), Uttar Pradesh

Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga, located in the ancient city of Varanasi (Kashi), Uttar Pradesh, is one of the most revered among the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. Situated on the western banks of the holy Ganga River, this temple is considered the spiritual heart of India. A visit to Kashi Vishwanath is believed to free devotees from the cycle of birth and death and grant liberation (moksha).

The word Vishwanath means “Lord of the Universe”. According to beliefs, Lord Shiva himself resides here as Kashi Vishwanath to bless his devotees. The temple holds immense importance in Hinduism, as Kashi is considered the city of salvation. Taking darshan of this Jyotirlinga is said to cleanse all sins and fulfill one’s spiritual desires.

According to legend, once Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu were debating about supremacy. To test them, Lord Shiva manifested as an infinite pillar of light (Jyotirlinga). While Brahma tried to find the top and Vishnu the bottom, neither could succeed. However, Brahma lied, claiming he found the top, which angered Shiva. As a result, Shiva cursed Brahma that he would not be worshipped, and blessed Vishnu for his honesty. The place where this divine light appeared is believed to be Kashi Vishwanath.

The Kashi Vishwanath temple, with its magnificent golden spire and domes, is a symbol of spiritual glory. The temple complex is beautifully built with intricate designs, and the spiritual aura is enhanced by the holy Ganga flowing nearby. The constant chanting of Har Har Mahadev fills the air, giving devotees a sense of peace and divine connection.
