History of Kirti Mandir

The original ancestral house of the Gandhi family was purchased by Mahatma Gandhi’s great-grandfather. Later, this home became a place of national importance when Gandhi was born here.
In 1950, the Kirti Mandir Memorial was built adjacent to this house by the Gandhi Smarak Nidhi to honor his life and teachings. It was inaugurated by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, making it one of the most significant historical landmarks in Gujarat.

Architecture and Design

The Kirti Mandir showcases a beautiful blend of Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain architectural styles, symbolizing Gandhi’s belief in universal harmony.
The 79-foot-high structure represents the 79 years of Gandhi’s life. Inside, visitors can see Gandhi’s birth room, preserved with simplicity - featuring his wooden bed, spinning wheel (charkha), and photographs that narrate his life journey.
