Purana Qila, or the Old Fort of Delhi, is one of the city’s oldest monuments. Built by Sher Shah Suri and Humayun, it blends history, Mughal architecture, and modern attractions like boating and a sound-and-light show, making it a must-visit spot in Delhi.

Purana Qila - The Timeless Old Fort of Delhi,

Long before modern Delhi came to life, Purana Qila stood as a symbol of power and history. With its massive stone walls, giant gateways, and centuries of stories, the Old Fort takes visitors on a journey back in time.

Many believe Purana Qila stands on the site of Indraprastha, the legendary capital mentioned in the Mahabharata. The fort in its present form was begun by Sher Shah Suri and later completed by Humayun in the 16th century.

The fort has three impressive gates – Bara Darwaza, Talaqi Darwaza, and Humayun Darwaza – each showcasing the strength and style of Mughal architecture. Inside, visitors can explore the beautiful Qila-i-Kuhna Mosque and the Sher Mandal, adding charm to the ancient surroundings.

Today, Purana Qila isn’t just about history. In the evenings, it hosts a sound and light show that narrates Delhi’s past in a captivating way. The nearby boating lake also makes it a popular spot for families and tourists looking to relax.
