Nalanda - Ancient University

Located in the Nalanda district of Bihar, Nalanda is one of the most remarkable historical and educational heritage sites in India. Once home to the world’s first residential university, Nalanda was a global center for learning, philosophy, and culture between the 5th and 12th centuries CE. Scholars from countries like China, Japan, Korea, and Tibet traveled here to study Buddhism, logic, medicine, and mathematics.

History and Significance

Founded during the Gupta dynasty, Nalanda University flourished under rulers like Kumaragupta I and later during the reign of Harshavardhana and Pala kings. The university was an architectural marvel with nine million manuscripts, grand libraries, temples, and hostels that could accommodate over 10,000 students and 2,000 teachers.

The great Chinese scholar Xuanzang (Hiuen Tsang) studied and taught here, and his travel records provide deep insight into the university’s glory. Unfortunately, Nalanda was destroyed in the 12th century by Bakhtiyar Khilji, marking the end of its golden era.

Modern Revival - Nalanda University (Re-established)

In 2010, a new Nalanda University was re-established near the ancient site with international collaboration, continuing the spirit of global learning and harmony that the ancient Nalanda once represented.
