Uparkot Fort, Junagadh

Perched high above Junagadh city, Uparkot Fort is one of the oldest and most fascinating historical sites in Gujarat. Built around 319 BCE by Chandragupta Maurya, this ancient citadel has witnessed centuries of wars, invasions, and reconstructions, yet it continues to stand as a symbol of strength and resilience.

The fort is surrounded by towering stone walls up to 20 meters high, enclosing a rich collection of ancient structures, stepwells, caves, and temples. As visitors enter through its majestic gates, they are transported back in time to an era of royal power and architectural brilliance.

Among the fort’s many attractions are the Adi-Kadi Vav and Navghan Kuvo, two deep stepwells carved into solid rock. These architectural marvels once provided water to the fort’s inhabitants and showcase the incredible craftsmanship of the time. Another highlight is the Buddhist Caves, dating back to the 2nd–3rd century, featuring intricately carved pillars and serene meditation chambers.

Inside the fort complex, the Jama Masjid, believed to have been converted from a palace by Sultan Mahmud Begada, adds to the fort’s rich historical blend. The bastions of Uparkot offer panoramic views of Junagadh city and the distant Girnar Hills, making it a favorite spot for photographers and history lovers alike.
