History of Anand Bhavan
Anand Bhavan was originally built in the early 20th century by Motilal Nehru, a prominent lawyer and freedom fighter. When the Indian independence movement gained momentum, Motilal Nehru donated the earlier family home, Swaraj Bhavan, to the nation. Anand Bhavan then became the new residence of the Nehru family.
It served as the home of Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister, and Indira Gandhi, India’s first woman Prime Minister. Many important meetings of the Indian National Congress were held here, making it a nerve center of the freedom struggle.
