The Ram Raja Temple is the only temple in India where Lord Ram is worshipped as a king, complete with royal rituals and guard of honour. Originally a palace, it became a temple when the idol of Lord Ram refused to move. Its peaceful ambience, unique history, and daily royal aarti make it one of Orchha’s most special attractions.

Ram Raja Temple, Orchha

The Ram Raja Temple in Orchha is one of the most unique temples in India, where Lord Ram is worshipped as a King, complete with royal guard of honour and daily court rituals. Unlike typical temple architecture, this shrine is actually a beautiful palace that later became a temple, giving it a distinct historical and spiritual charm.

Located in the heart of Orchha, this temple attracts thousands of devotees who come to witness the royal aarti, changing of guards, and the peaceful ambience of the Orchha heritage town. Its serene courtyards, pastel-coloured walls, and spiritual energy make it a must-visit destination.

History of Ram Raja Temple

The story behind the temple is deeply connected to Queen Ganesh Kunwari (also known as Rani Kamlapati). According to legend, she brought an idol of Lord Ram from Ayodhya and placed it in her palace. Once placed inside, the idol refused to shift to the main temple being built nearby.

Because of this divine event, the palace itself became the temple - known today as Ram Raja Temple, where Lord Ram is worshipped as a king, not just a deity.
