History and Significance

According to Hindu mythology, the demon Gayasura was subdued by Lord Vishnu, who pressed his foot on the demon’s chest, leaving behind a divine footprint. The sacred spot became the foundation of the Vishnupad Temple.
The present structure was rebuilt in the 18th century by Queen Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore, who also restored several ancient temples across India. The name Vishnupad literally translates to “the footprint of Lord Vishnu.”

Architecture

Made entirely of gray granite stone, the temple features exquisite carvings and a 50-meter-high shikhara (spire) that dominates the skyline of Gaya. Inside the sanctum, the footprint of Lord Vishnu is covered with silver plating and surrounded by flowers and lamps. The temple complex also has smaller shrines dedicated to other deities, creating an atmosphere of deep spirituality.
