Ramanathaswamy Jyotirlinga - Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu

Ramanathaswamy Jyotirlinga, located in Rameswaram (Tamil Nadu), is one of the 12 holy Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and an important Hindu pilgrimage. The temple is also part of the Char Dham Yatra (Badrinath, Dwarka, Puri, and Rameswaram), making it a must-visit for devotees. Known for its magnificent corridors and sacred rituals, the temple attracts thousands of pilgrims every year.

The story of this Jyotirlinga is closely connected with the Ramayana. After defeating Ravana in Lanka, Lord Rama wanted to worship Lord Shiva to seek forgiveness for killing a Brahmin (Ravana). He asked Hanuman to bring a Shiva Lingam from Kailash. While waiting, Mother Sita made a Lingam out of sand.

Both Lingams are worshipped at the temple - the one brought by Hanuman is called Viswalingam, and the one made by Sita is known as the Ramanathaswamy Lingam. Lord Rama declared that devotees should first worship Viswalingam before Ramanathaswamy Lingam, a practice followed even today.

It is the southernmost Jyotirlinga in India. Part of the Char Dham pilgrimage, making it highly sacred for Hindus. The temple is famous for its 22 holy wells (Teerthams) - bathing in these wells is believed to cleanse sins and purify the soul. Devotees believe that offering prayers here removes past karma and grants moksha (liberation).

Ramanathaswamy Temple is known for its spectacular Dravidian-style architecture. The temple has the longest corridors in the world, stretching over 1,200 meters with beautifully carved pillars. Intricate sculptures and ancient shrines add to its grandeur. The sanctum houses the two sacred Lingams - Ramanathaswamy Lingam and Viswalingam.
